How ‘live’ are our so-called live news channel discussions?

Generally news are created, anything and everything don’t just turn out to be news contrary to the parameters that define news; prominence, timeliness, proximity, impact, magnitude, controversy, novelty and emotional impact. Keralalites are blessed to have 5 exclusive news channels to watch news live; Asianet News, Manorama News, Indiavision, Reporter, Mathrubhumi and part-time news channels such as; Jeevan TV, Surya TV, Jai Hind, Amrita TV and Media one.

The unwritten law of the land is always the survival of the fittest and in the wake of the competition and to amplify the Television Rating Point (TRP), all the news channels have a news hour segment at 9pm to 10pm every night where the channels come up with, supposedly, the main topic of the day which is of common interest, sometime insignificant, and call expert people up, mainly from various political parties being all the topics are politically related, to discuss and arrive at a conclusion towards the end of the news hour.

The news hour runs under the title ‘live’ discussion but how many of the so-called news channel discussions are really live? All of us have a wrong notion that it is all live but we can closely observe and switch to various news hour programmes in different channels we would be surprised and shocked to see the omnipresent of the particular expert/key speaker in various channels simultaneously, discussing the same topic. So how ‘live’ is the so-called news channel discussion and it is just utter ridicule to air it as live discussion.

Viewers who do not keep switching to various news channels may not come to know about these facts.  To validate my point I have one instance to narrate; that is on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, 9pm to 10pm news hour, where M.B. Rajesh MP of CPM (I) has been taking part in the live news channel discussions over BJP-Modi-resignation of Advani from all the party posts which triggered a Move to establish Federal Allies both in Indiavision and Mathrubhumi news channels. He was omnipresent in both the new channels at the same hour (simultaneously).

This points to the fact that most of the so-called news channel discussions are pre-recorded but only being aired as live news channel discussions. When there is only an expert or key speaker to respond to the queries raised by the news reader, he/she is inevitable for all the news channels and as he might have already committed to a particular channel for the news hour discussion for the given day. Without the expert/key speaker the news hour discussion can’t be complete so his/her bytes are pre-recorded and being incorporated in the news hour discussion and being aired as live news hour discussion.

When and where the topic of the news hour topic is controversial, the politicians concerned gets a chance to clear his stance or his party’s so in due course, he/she commits to all news channels for the news hour discussion and being unable to attend all the news hours simultaneously his byte is pre-recorded to be aired as live news channel discussion.

It is not just an isolated incident or it is not first-of-its kind. As the viewer sticks on to a particular news channel discussion he/she being inclined to a particular political party and ideologies, as each news channel has an inclination to a particular party; he or she may not be aware that the expert/key speaker discussing the given topic in a particular channel is omnipresent in all other news channels discussing the same topic at the same time. Here, this fact I have made an attempt to bring the attention to……

(I have a few more such instances to validate but as I don’t have photographic evidence, so I just reframe from my further attempts…..)
