Why has God created mosquitoes at all?

Though mosquito is a tiny creature, the amount of harm it can cause is terrible, from sleepless nights, deadly diseases to untimely death. Considering its size, the damage it could create is totally out of proportion.

As a child I used to think if God has created everything, then each being has to have a purpose in His creation. So what was the purpose of mosquito? To poke us, to spread diseases. Therefore, I couldn't believe that mosquitoes were really created by God.

However, the scripture says, For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. (Colossians 1:16)

The question that I had in my childhood, which remained there unanswered for quite a long time, 'why did God in His infinite wisdom, create mosquitoes and what would have been its purpose?', got answered by the 'reasoning I' within me.

God has created mosquitoes also as part of the ecosystem, as all creatures help to balance out the ecosystem. Just as the spider kills bugs so they don't over populate, also, the cat kills the mouse, and the bird eats the worm, thus making up a chain, in which mosquitoes spread deadly diseases that kill human beings so that humans do not overpopulate. If one specious alone overpopulates, automatically the other species will be extinct from the planet of earth and equilibrium of mother earth will be at peril.

For instance, the Madras Christian College campus spanning over 350 acres is said to have been a scrub forest with a sizable population of herd of deer, which in the absence of carnivores like wolves or tigers exploded to eat up all vegetation. As a natural ecosystem there should be carnivals to eat deer so that they would not over populate. In the case of humans, the population explosion happened and we became 7.6 billion (as of July 2018) only because of scientific and medical advancement. In the natural ecosystem most of us would not have survived. The major reason for the drastic climate changes across the globe turns out to be the overbearing increase in the population of human beings.

Mosquito-borne diseases are diseases caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. They can transmit disease without getting affected themselves. Nearly 700 million people get a mosquito-borne illness each year resulting in over one million deaths. Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes include; malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, filariasis, tularemia, dirofilariasis, Japanese encephalitis, Saint Louis encephalitis, Western equine encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, Ross River fever, Barmah Forest fever, La Crosse encephalitis, and Zika fever, as well as the newly detected Keystone virus and Rift Valley fever.

Though we are scientifically and medically advanced we have not been able to completely chock the spread of these diseases, which cause deaths of millions every year. This points to the helplessness of human beings though they boast to have advanced in all spheres. A few dozens of mosquitoes alone can entirely erase human race in a given geographical area by spreading an epidemic.

There was a recent study on the most dangerous animals in the world in terms of killing the maximum number of human beings per year. Perhaps, we would have thought it could be Shark, Cape Buffalo, Elephant, Crocodile or Snake. However, the answer was surprisingly shocking, because the so called ‘animal’ turned out to be mosquito, affecting roughly 700 million and killing almost 725,000 people each year.
