The tech-savvy youth not owning any mobile phone

It would have been way back in 2011, for the first time, that i met this person wearing a long kurta, with an unshaved face and not properly combed hair, in the bus plying to Ernakulam and return, and at bus stops. After having met him frequently, i made friendship with him, and casually asked him for his contact number. When he said he did not have a mobile phone, my initial thought was that he was kidding me and did not want to share his contact number with me.

On our journey back to our native place from Ernakulam, we used to engage in discussions on philosophical, technological, scientific and political matters. He is found to be very knowledgeable and well read on so many topics.

Yes, it would be quite amusing to have an encounter with a person who is fully updated with all knowledge of electronic and communication spheres, yet still doesn't possess a mobile phone. He is Sooraj Kamal, currently pursuing his PhD in Underwater Acoustics in Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).
If anyone wants to buy a new mobile phone or any electronic gadget and wanted to have an opinion, for them all, the most unbiased recommendation would be provided by Sooraj. Because he keeps himself updated inspite of not owning the gadget. The opinion of a person who possesses a gadget or a mobile is positively or negatively biased based on the brand he owns while providing his opinion.

Sooraj commutes by KSRTC buses between Koothattukulam and Ernakulam. He hardly travels in private buses, even when he misses his last KSRTC bus from Koothattukulam to his hometown and has to hire an auto to reach home. He does not even have a watch nor a money wallet to carry his cash. Such a peculiar person he is. Yet, he is very sociable, friendly and communicative.

Because of his undivided love for the pursuit for knowledge, he has no plan for a married life. I used to tell him that if Senior Sooraj (his father) had decided not to marry, Sooraj wouldn't have been born, so he shouldn't deny the chance of Junior Sooraj to be born on this planet. He would just respond to it with a smile, as if he enjoyed that good joke.

He is mulling over post doctoral studies after the completion of his PhD. Apparently he doesn't have any plan to end his quest for knowledge.

Sooraj Kamal was born on February 14, 1981, as the 1st child of Peethambaran T.K. and Kamalakshi V.N. of Thombikottu. He had his schooling from Government Model High School, Palakkuzha. After the 10th standard, he completed his Higher Secondary Education from Technical Higher Secondary School IHRD, Thodupuzha during 1996 - 1998.

Later he did his graduation in Physics from St. Joseph's College, Moolamattam during 1998 - 2001. After his degree studies he, along his friends, established an entrepreneurship venture named Quark Systems - Software and Hardware (developing software for Hardware), industrial automation during 2001 -2004, at Thodupuzha.

He went on to join for Post Graduation in Electronics at College of Applied Science IHRD, Thodupuzha during 2004 - 2006 and later joined as Embedded Systems Engineer in M Squired, Techno Park (2006 - 2008).

After 2 years of professional career, he along with four friends expanded Quark Systems to Quark Cybernetics and Fundamental Research Laboratories and established it in Kaloor (2008 - 2011).

In 2010 he joined at CUSAT as Project Scientist and enrolled for PhD in 2011 and later joined in another project. His research specialization is in Underwater Acoustics. From 2016 onwards he is completely into his research and the thesis is expected to be tabled by 2020.
